Dauenhauer zeigt Kampfgeist bei seinem Debüt im Ovalracing
Beim vierten Rennwochenende der NASCAR Europameisterschaft vom 28.-30. Juni ging es für Tobias Dauenhauer und sein Team Bremotion im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes rund: Auf dem Halbmeilen-Ovalkurs des Raceway Venrays in den Niederlanden fand das einzige NASCAR-Ovalrennen außerhalb Amerikas statt. Für Dauenhauer und sein Team eine komplett neue Herausforderung, denn zuvor ist man noch nie ein Rennen im Oval gefahren.
Im Gegensatz zu den bisherigen Rennwochenenden, bei denen jeweils zwei Rennen pro Wochenende in der PRO Wertung ausgetragen wurden, stand im niederländischen Venray nur ein Rennen pro Klasse auf dem Programm. In den beiden freien Trainingssitzungen konnte Dauenhauer sich schnell auf dem Ovalkurs zurechtfinden und man testete noch einige Einstellungen am EuroNASCAR Chevrolet Camaro. Am Ende konnte der Mörlenbacher Platz 6 und 9 in den Trainings belegen. Weiter ging es mit dem Single-Car-Qualifying, wofür die Piloten allein auf der Strecke jeweils zwei schnelle Runden zur Verfügung haben, um ihre schnellste Zeit zu setzen. Der ADAC Hessen-Thüringen Förderpilot konnte innerhalb der 2 Runden seine Reifen nicht ganz auf die optimale Temperatur bringen und reihte sich somit auf Platz 10 ein.
Am Sonntagmittag startete dann das Rennen über eine Renndistanz von 100 Runden. Dauenhauer erwischte zunächst einen guten Start und konnte seinen Platz verteidigen. In den ersten Runden musste Dauenhauer einen Platz hergeben und fiel zwischenzeitlich auf Platz 11 zurück. Im weiteren Rennverlauf zeigte der 26-Jährige kämpferische Stärke und konnte sich mit packenden Überholmanövern nach vorne arbeiten. Eine Safety-Car-Phase mit anschließendem Restart kurz vor Rennende sorgte nochmals für Spannung. Hier konnte Dauenhauer eine weitere Platzierung gut machen und schlussendlich auf Platz 7 die Ziellinie überqueren.
Dauenhauer nach dem Rennen: „Leider hatten wir kein optimales Qualifying und kämpften mit unruhiger Straßenlage des V8-Boliden. Trotzdem konnten wir denke ich ein spannendes Rennen zeigen und mit Platz 7 wichtige Meisterschaftspunkte mit nach Hause nehmen. Unser Ziel ist aber um Siege und Podiumsplätze zu kämpfen und wir werden in den kommenden Wochen alles daran setzen, den Speed für ganz vorne wieder zu finden. Rennen im Oval sind schon etwas Besonderes, wenn man millimetergenau an der Wand entlangfährt. Es war eine tolle Erfahrung.“
Jetzt steht bei der NASCAR Europameisterschaft erstmal eine kleine Sommerpause an, bis es vom 30. August bis 01. September in Tschechien mit dem fünften Rennwochenende auf dem Autodrom Most weiter geht. Hier werden wie gewohnt wieder 2 Rennen pro Klasse am Wochenende stattfinden.
Dauenhauer shows fighting spirit in his oval racing debut
At the fourth race weekend of the NASCAR European Championship from June 28-30, things went literally full circle for Tobias Dauenhauer and his team Bremotion: The only NASCAR oval race outside of America took place on the half-mile oval track of Raceway Venray in the Netherlands. For Dauenhauer and his team, this was a completely new challenge, as they had never raced on an oval before.
As opposed to the previous race weekends, where two races per weekend were held in the PRO classification, only one race per class was on the schedule in Venray. In the two free practice sessions, Dauenhauer quickly adapted to the oval track and tested several settings on the EuroNASCAR Chevrolet Camaro. In the end, Dauenhauer secured place 6th and 9th in practice. Next came the single-car-qualifying, where the drivers had two fast laps on the track to set their best time. The ADAC Hesse-Thuringia supported driver couldn't quite get his tires up to the optimal temperature within the two laps, which placed him 10th on the grid.
On Sunday afternoon, the race started over a distance of 100 laps. Dauenhauer initially got off to a good start and was able to defend his position. In the early laps, Dauenhauer lost one position and temporarily dropped back to 11th place. As the race progressed, the 26-year-old showed fighting strength and worked his way forward with exciting overtaking maneuvers. A safety car period followed by a restart shortly before the end of the race added some excitement. Here, Dauenhauer was able to gain another position and ultimately crossed the finish line in 7th place.
After the race, Dauenhauer said: “Unfortunately, we didn't have an optimal qualifying and struggled with the unsettled handling of the car. Nevertheless, I think we showed an exciting race and brought home important championship points with 7th place. However our goal is to fight for wins and podium places, and we will do everything we can in the coming weeks to regain the speed for the top spots. Oval racing is something special, especially when you are driving millimeter-precise along the wall. It was a great experience.”
Now there is a small summer break in the NASCAR European Championship before the fifth race weekend will take place at the Autodrom Most in Czech Republic from August 30 to September 1. Here, as usual, two races per class will be on the agenda over the weekend.
